Understanding Our Trail Ratings/Elevation Profile System

Know Your Colour:  Green, Blue and Black.  Those colours and shapes on designated trail name signs help identify the difficulty.  The rating is based mainly on the slope and distance of the trail and provides consistency across our regional park system.  However other factors such as obstacles, fitness level and preparedness are also considered.

Each designated trail also has a trail profile.  This gives you a visual look at the changes in elevation along a trail's length.  Of particular interest is the height over distance when interpreting the profile of the trail.  At first glance, a trail profile can be deceiving.   Take a moment to look at the actual elevation changes and distance in order to get a more accurate picture of the trail profile and what you can expect on the ground!
