What Happens in a Landfill

The Regional District of Central Okanagan operates this facility at the site of the former Westside Landfill on Asquith Road, off Shannon Lake Road in West Kelowna.  It has two components for Residential Waste materials:  A Waste Disposal Transfer facility and a Recycling Centre.

The Residential Waste Disposal facility is a larger municipal solid waste transfer station, as all materials that are accepted, are disposed of and processed off site.  For example, residential garbage, yard and construction wood wastes are trucked to the Glenmore Landfill in the City of Kelowna, the only remaining active landfill for the Central Okanagan.  The Westside site provides a convenient drop off location for residents of West Kelowna, Peachland, Central Okanagan West and the Westbank First Nation reserves #9 and #10.

Residential Waste Disposal
This facility is open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 7:30am to 4:00 pm (gates close at 3:50 pm) for drop off of residential solid waste.  It is closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  When applicable, materials are subject to regular tipping and disposal fees.  For more information on what's accepted and not accepted, view this link or please call the Information Line at 250-469-6250 or view the Hours and Rates link.  Please remember that all loads must be covered.

Recycling Centre
The Recycling Centre offers services at the Asquith Road location, seven days a week between 7:30am and 4:00pm (closed Christmas and New Year's Day).  All residential materials accepted for recycling may be dropped off at this location during operating hours.  This includes unwanted items for reuse that may be dropped off at the Big Brothers/Big Sisters trailers.  For more information please call the Information Line at 250-469-6250.

Former Westside Sanitary Landfill
As of July 16, 2010 the active land filling life of this facility ended and materials are no longer being buried at the Asquith Road property.  The landfill is currently in the early stages of closure as required by the Ministry of Environment.  A formal Closure Plan is being developed by the Regional District of Central Okanagan to guide it in the formal closure process, site rehabilitation and ongoing environmental monitoring.

The Regional District Solid Waste Management Plan, outlined a gradual phase out and scaling down of the Westside Landfill operation.  View more about this on the Westside Landfill Closure webpage
