documents that formed the focus of the extensive and
comprehensive public consultation regarding updating the
Solid Waste Management Plan.
Reviewing the Future of our Garbage
Residents and businesses in the Central
Okanagan have made great strides in reducing garbage by recycling
and composting. However, with a booming construction industry and
continued economic growth increases predicted, the need to manage
and protect our scarce landfill space is more important than ever.
The Regional District of Central
Okanagan conducted an extensive public consultation process during
2005 and 2006 to review and update the Solid Waste Management Plan.
Consultation is Key
A consultant was hired to facilitate the review process which
examined current programs, evaluating their effectiveness at
reducing and managing all aspects of solid waste and setting new
goals to work towards over the next 20 years. As well, options
for future waste reduction and management were presented for
discussion, review and comments by two committees: A Technical
Advisory Committee (TAC) was made up of representatives of local
and provincial governments while the Public Advisory Committee
(PAC) brought together members of the public representing a wide
range of community interests, such as neighbourhood groups,
businesses, service clubs, construction groups and institutions.
During the spring of 2006, proposed programs and strategies were
presented to the general public through community meetings to
help guide the development of the draft Solid Waste Management
Plan. A number of 'Let's Talk Trash'
Open Houses were held throughout the region. Approximately
200 residents participated and had their say about the future of
garbage and recycling programs in the Central Okanagan. As
well, many people took the opportunity to provide their thoughts
through an online questionnaire. Open
