New in 2011 – The City of
Kelowna and Regional Waste
Reduction Office are
launching a program to
reduce the amount of
recyclables businesses and
multi-family developments
are throwing in the
garbage.
The program is in response
to the results of a
comprehensive waste
composition study conducted
at the Glenmore landfill in
2010. It showed
approximately 50% of garbage
originating from local
businesses and multi- family
developments could have been
diverted into an existing
recycling program. Since
businesses create over half
of the waste produced in the
Central Okanagan, disposing
of your garbage in the most
responsible way possible,
both environmentally and
socially becomes
increasingly important.
This section of the website
is designed to assist you in
bringing your current
garbage and recycling
programs in line with new
waste diversion
requirements. The
following three-step process
will insure you are doing
everything you can to
dispose of your waste
properly and avoid incurring
unnecessary surcharges.
Tips and Strategies to
Better Dispose of Your
Waste
Studies have shown that
customers, employees and
the public regard
businesses that
implement waste
reduction programs more
favorably than
businesses that do not,
particularly when these
actions are voluntary.
By presenting yourself
as a leader in waste
reduction, you’ll
encourage other
companies and people to
do the same.
