Solid Waste Disposal Information
Landfill and Transfer
facility Locations
Before you go
How we dispose of our garbage affects the environment and our health. It's important
to be aware of what should be recycled at the curb, brought to recycling depots,
or disposed of in another way than sent to the landfill. The ultimate goal is to
have as little material going to landfills as possible.
A large percentage of waste that is brought to the landfills can be recycled or
reused. By paying close attention to what we're putting in our garbage cans, and
recycling materials whenever possible, we can increase the stream of goods produced
by recycling rather than using up precious space and money in landfills.
There are many private companies that accept waste materials such as metals and
appliances at little or no charge. All paper and cardboard are banned from landfill
disposal and must be recycled. Check our
Recycling Directory first to save yourself some money and time and to help
conserve valuable space in our landfills.
If you're taking waste material to the landfill, please be sure to cover your load
with a tarp in accordance with local bylaws and help keep our roads safe and clean.
The Regional District also provides two Transfer Stations for disposal of
household garbage and recyclables for residents along Westside Road. One station
is located off Westside Road at
Traders Cove. It is open during the Winter
months on Wednesday from 6:30 am to 10:30 am and Sunday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
During the Summer the operating hours are 6:30 am to 10:30 am on Wednesday and 9:00
am to 6:00 pm on Sunday. The other station is for
North Westside
residents and is located
at Sugarloaf Mountain,
along the Whiteman Creek
Forest Service Road
(follow the signs - turn
at the corner of
Westside Road and
Sugarloaf
Mountain/Whiteman Creek
Forest Service Road).

Banned Materials
There are certain materials not accepted at local landfills, either because there
are already disposal programs in place for these items, or because they are hazardous
to waste collection workers and the public. Materials banned from disposal facilities
include:
- Household Hazardous Wastes (HHW's)
HHW's are hazardous materials that can leach into the ground and contaminate the
soil and ground water. These materials are dangerous to people, pets and the environment.
Some examples of HHW's are solvents, oil, pesticides, paints and cleaners. For information
on disposal options for HHW's,
view a copy of the Hazardous Waste Directory
- Asphalt & Concrete -
View the Commercial Recycling Directory section on Construction, Demolition
and Renovation for disposal options
- All paper and Cardboard - MUST BE RECYCLED. Loads containing these items are subject
to fines.
- Drywall/Gypsum - MUST BE RECYCLED. Loads containing these items are subject
to fines. Special bins are located at landfill sites for Drywall/Gypsum (tipping
fee of $145/tonne applies).
How We're Doing?
Since 1999, a number of areas have been tracked to provide a benchmark and indication
of how our Waste Management programs are performing. Here's how we're doing
in the areas of
Solid Waste,
Recycling and
Hazardous Waste.
