Foreshore Inventory and Mapping (FIM) & Aquatic Habitat Index (AHI)

What is the FIM?

The Central Okanagan Foreshore Inventory and Mapping project completed in 2005 and the more recent Okanagan Lake compilation project addresses the current status of the entire Okanagan Lake foreshore including the Central Okanagan. It provides agencies with an easily accessible inventory of land use, shore type, existing riparian condition and anthropogenic alterations throughout the study area.

What is Aquatic Habitat Inventory (AHI)?

AHI for Okanagan Lake provides valuable information regarding the estimated habitat values of different shoreline areas.  The AHI is a categorical scale of relative habitat value that ranks shoreline segments to other segments on Okanagan Lake in a range between Very High and Very Low.

What will it be used for?

It will aid in developing land use policies, regulations and standards and is intended to increase long-term environmental planning capabilities for the protection of aquatic and riparian habitat within existing local government land-use planning programs.  The project will also serve as a benchmark for regulatory agencies by documenting current foreshore conditions.  In addition, it will  provide evidence for regulatory investigations and will assess objectives set out in foreshore protection initiatives.

Who is involved?

The original 2005 project was made possible through contributions from the Real Estate Foundation, Ministry of Environment, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the District of Lake Country, the City of Kelowna, the Community Mapping Network and the Regional District of Central Okanagan.  The more recent "Okanagan Lake: A Compilation of the North, South and Central Okanagan Lake" project was facilitated by the Okanagan Collaborative Conservation Program (OCCP) and funded through the Okanagan Basin Water Board along with local, provincial and federal government partners.
