Westside Parks & Recreation News:
Heat will be on at Royal LePage
Place
The
ice is melting in Royal LePage Place
and that’s a sign that it should be
warmer inside the facility next
season.
With
the final ice event of the winter
recreation season now history,
Westside Parks and Recreation staff
have turned off the ice plant
components and are preparing for the
annual summer maintenance program.
While they are busy this week saving
the logos that were imbedded in the
ice and will begin all the duties
associated with removing the ice,
other workers will continue over the
next few months hooking up the new
heating system to the geo-thermal
energy centre.
Communications Coordinator Bruce
Smith says, “In January, the
Regional Board approved awarding a
contract to Selkirk Mechanical
Limited to supply and install the
energy centre, however the actual
work cannot be completed until the
last ice users are finished for the
season. Now that they’ve hung up
their skates until later this
summer, workers can get cracking on
bringing heat to the building.”
The
contract is worth almost $745,000
plus GST and is being completely
covered through the Canada/BC
Infrastructure Program Community
Works program funding grant received
by the Regional District in 2007.
The use of the geo-thermal system is
expected to result in energy savings
during the winter season, compared
with a standard gas-fired heating
system.
Smith says, “In order to connect the
new energy centre to the geo-thermal
field constructed under Royal LePage
Place, the ice plant must be shut
down. This allows workers to put in
new pumps, storage tanks and a new,
larger heat exchanger that will take
the energy produced from the ice
plant and store it in the
underground field so that it can be
used when needed to provide heat to
the building. We know many visitors
and spectators to Royal LePage Place
will be happy to hear this work is
underway and the facility will have
heating for next season.” The
energy centre should be complete by
August. Link to

There’s a quick turnaround for
completion of the work in and around
the ice surface. Starting May 15th,
Royal LePage Place will be home to
the Kelowna Warriors of the Thompson
Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League for
practices and games in the seven
team league. The ice-free break
won’t be that long. The week of
July 21st, facility staff
will begin preparing both Royal
LePage Place and Jim Lind arena for
the next ice sports season. The
first groups will be able to lace up
their skates starting August 5th.

The Westside Is Showing R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Be
on the lookout for Westside youth
showing RESPECT.
Westside Parks and Recreation, the
Regional Crime Prevention Program,
Central Okanagan Crime Stoppers,
RCMP, Okanagan Boys and Girls Club,
and Westside businesses have joined
forces to launch a new program which
promotes and rewards respect.
RESPECT (which stands for
Recognizing Every Strategy Promoting
Excellent Community Trust) is a
“positive ticketing” program that
encourages community relations and
trust. It focuses on building
relationships between youth, the
community and the RCMP with the goal
of creating a more positive
Westside
The
program has a unique twist in that
receiving a RESPECT ticket is a good
thing. RCMP officers on the Westside
will be looking for and rewarding
respectful behaviour by providing
youth with positive tickets which
include coupons for free goods in
the community. Westside businesses
have jumped on board to support the
program and sponsors include the
Westside Warriors, Movie Gallery,
Starbucks, Boston Pizza, Fogg n’
Suds, Little Caesars and
McDonald’s.
“This is a positive way to interact
with the youth in our community.
It’s great for our members to look
for good things that young people
are doing and reward them for their
positive behaviour and actions,”
says Constable Dean Webb.
The
Westside RESPECT program is
currently a pilot project running
through December of this year. With
the anticipated success of the
program and the continued support of
the community, organizers hope to
expand the program throughout the
Central Okanagan.
