What Happens in a Landfill

Bylaw 579 and 581

The Westside Landfill Tipping Fee and Regulation Bylaw 579 and 581 contain the regulations in effect at the Westside Waste Disposal and Recycling Centre on Asquith Road in West Kelowna.   Materials Accepted/Not Accepted

Safety

Customers and visitors are required to comply with all posted site regulations. Also, due to the high risk of fire and the presence of landfill gas, smoking is strictly prohibited. Fines are in effect.

Covered Loads

All loads must be covered and secured in order to reduce litter on roadways. Those vehicles arriving with uncovered loads will be charged double the normal fee.

Offences

The following offences are subject to a fine of $100.00:

  • Deposit before weighing
  • Deposit contrary to instructions
  • Deposit of non-district waste
  • Depositing restricted waste
  • Depositing while charge unpaid
  • Disobeying posted regulations
  • Driving off designated roads
  • Exceeding posted speed limits
  • Failing to pay fee
  • Insecure load
  • Uncovered load
  • Loitering
  • Noisy vehicle
  • Over-weight vehicle
  • Scavenging
  • Smoking at the disposal site

The following offences are subject to a fine of $150.00:

  • Depositing controlled waste without approval
  • Depositing prohibited waste

Restricted Wastes

The following materials are restricted from land filling and render a person, upon conviction, liable for a fine of not less than one hundred dollars. ($100.00). A conviction may also lead to being prohibited from using the Westside Waste Disposal and Recycling Centre or Glenmore Landfill in the future.

  • Aggregate
  • Asphalt paving
  • Clean soil
  • Concrete
  • Corrugated cardboard* (small loads**)
  • Directories*
  • Lead acid batteries*
  • Mixed paper*
  • Newspapers*
  • Propane tanks*
  • Rubble
  • Scrap metals*
  • Tires*
  • Used oil filters*
  • White goods* (large appliances)

** small loads will be charged double the normal fee

Prohibited Wastes

The following materials are strictly prohibited from land filling:

  • Drywall
  • Hazardous wastes
  • Ignitable wastes
  • Liquids (except by permit)
  • Motor vehicle bodies and farm implements
  • Radioactive waste
  • Reactive wastes
  • Refuse that is on fire or is smoldering
  • Special waste
