Westside Landfill: A Closer Look at the Westside and Glenmore Landfills
In 2003, every man, woman and child in the Central Okanagan generated an average
of 1.97 kilograms of solid waste and recyclables per day.
Prior to 1990, almost all of that waste ended up in the Westside and Glenmore Landfills.
But since that time, our community has changed the way it looks at garbage by:
- Reducing the amount of waste we generate;
- Undertaking extensive material reuse and recycling programs;
- Landfilling the residual.
Because of these changes, 33,000 tonnes (34%) of waste did not get landfilled in
our region in 2003. However, because we can't reduce, reuse or recycle all of our
waste, there is still a need to landfill approximately 97,000 tonnes per year at
the Westside and Glenmore Landfills.
The Regional District Solid Waste Management Plan, proposes a gradual phase out
and scaling down of the Westside Landfill operation, with closure planned as early
as 2010. While it is not anticipated to remain an active landfill location,
the site could house a convenient transfer drop off station and/or recycling location
for some materials. Link to

How We're Doing?
Since 1999, a number of areas have been tracked to provide a benchmark and indication
of how our Waste Management programs are performing. Here's how we're doing
in the areas of
Solid Waste,
Recycling and
Hazardous Waste.
