Liquid Waste Management Plan
In the late 1980's the Government of British Columbia designated the Okanagan Water
Basin as a special environmental zone. The Regional District was required to prepare
a Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP)
to examine ways to
reduce the amount of
phosphorus loading
entering our lakes and
rivers. The LWMP
objective helps to define the
wastewater treatment and disposal requirements in order to preserve and improve
water quality in the Okanagan Water Basin. The LWMP focuses on the long-term suitability
of individual septic tanks and disposal fields for wastewater treatment and disposal.
The LWMP was adopted in 1991 and updated in 2000. It identified areas of wastewater
related concern (Link
to map showing Liquid Waste Management Plan Group Areas) and grouped the
areas as follows:
-
Group One
- Areas where both septic tank problems have been documented and phosphorus loading
are in excess of acceptable standards, or where in the opinion of the Medical Health
Officer, septic tank malfunctions are both widespread and in sufficient numbers
to represent a public health concern. All group one areas have been serviced
including: Casa Loma, Hitchner Road, West Kelowna Estates, Green Bay, Pritchard
Drive, Sunnyside, Whitworth Road, Witt Road and Sunnyview.
-
Group Two
- Areas where septic tank problems have been defined or where phosphorus loading are
in excess of acceptable standards.
-
Group Three
- Areas where there is
some indication that
septic tank operational
problems may be
experienced in the
future.
